SUBIC BAY FREEPORT ZONE—With state security forces suspected of involvement in a spate of extrajudicial killings, President Benigno Aquino III Friday reminded the Philippine National Police to uphold human rights and restore trust in the government.
“The importance of the national police is clear to me. It’s anchored on good deeds. What’s the use of having law enforcers if you become the lawbreakers?” Mr. Aquino said in Filipino in a speech at the opening of the PNP School for Values and Leadership here.
It was his first address to the PNP since he was sworn into office on June 30.
“During the campaign, our battle cry was ‘Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap (No corruption, no poverty).’ That includes the protection of human rights that forms part of your sworn duty,” he said.
