MANILA, Philippines – Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala on Wednesday said his department will build grains terminals and trading posts in Mindanao as part of a strategy to boost food security in Luzon and the rest of the country.
Speaking to ANC’s Headstart, Alcala said Mindanao is essential to the government’s efforts to raise food security in the country because it has good soil, good irrigation and no big typhoons.
“This is where we want to put up grains terminals because majority of the food is being consumed by Metro Manila. We need to find a way to send the food from Mindanao to Luzon. There has to be a grains terminal with a drying and processing facility, a silo, and with access to bulk carriers,” he told Headstart host Karen Davila.
Alcala said the Department of Agriculture will woo the private sector to invest in these infrastructure projects so that they could also benefit from trading fresh produce from Mindanao.
